Phimai National Museum director Suriya Tantaranon said he expected flooding at the museum whenever the level of the Mool River rises in Nakhon Ratchasima.
“Flooding is a constant problem,” he said yesterday.
Last Saturday, he instructed officials to build a sandbag barrier around the museum to try to keep the water out.
“But the embankment didn’t help. The torrent of water was just too ferocious,” Suriya said.
Currently, floodwater has filled the museum’s grounds. However, thanks to another one-metre-high embankment, the water has yet to get inside the museum buildings.
The museum has many historical and valuable items including foundation stones, ancient pottery, Buddha statues, and amulets on display. Some pieces date back to the 15th and 16th Century on the Buddhist calendar.
“If the flood gets in, we will have to move these items to higher floors. But for big items, we won’t be able to do anything,” Suriya said.
